Music Lovers,
Cheryl and I are winding down our 2014-15 Doverlaff House Concerts series. As you know, The Birds of Chicago will be here next Thursday, June 25. We are very happy to have the Birds back for their second appearance in the Tiki room. We will not be able to do this show outside as it is a weeknight and we do not want to cause our neighbors any distress. So we will see you next Thursday here for another great show.
But that is not why I am writing today. We have added a final show to this years season. Our good friend, Andrew Goncalves, will be here for a second CD release party for his new recording “Fire Inside”‘ on Sunday, July 5. We hope you can be here.
If you received our previous message about this show you will note that that evil monster auto correct changed his name to Congalves each time I entered it. It NOT Concalves, but Goncalves, Andrew Goncalves, extraordinary guitar player, singer and songwriter. If you are a regular at Artichoke Music, you have heard him sing his wonderful song “Kentucky Blue.” You can bet you will get to heard that song again, as well as the other songs from his new CD and, I am sure, some surprises.
Andrew puts all of himself into the music….every strum, drumbeat, and belted out melody that he sings. His guitar playing is clean and diverse, varying from fingerstyle to percussive with some flamenco overtones. His music and lyrics are infused with his time out on the road of life, and the timeless search for home. Andrew recorded his first album with the band “Boa Saida” back in 2010 and has just completed his long awaited first solo album, Fire Inside.
Here are some other songs by Andrew to give you a taste, if you are not already familiar with his work. If you are, here is a chance to listen again.
Andrew will be accompanied by his old band mate, from his days with Boa Saida, Boris Popaduik, (here playing Julie O – be sure to click) and, just maybe, his sister, Oksana. Boris is a native of Portland, Oregon and a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory. He currently serves as a graduate teaching assistant at the Frost School of Music in Miami, Florida, where he is getting a masters in cello performance. Trained as a classical cellist, Boris eagerly explores a wide array of genres. He has performed and recorded with classical, jazz and pop artists, from Jeremy Denk and the Punch Brothers to Gloria Estefan and Barry Manilow. Boris is a budding improviser and is determined in his efforts to liberate himself from the shackles of sheet music.
Of course, words don’t count, unless they are being sung. Come join us on Sunday, July 5 to the words and licks that matter.. Suggested donation $10-15 dollars. Of course, you can always donate more. Snacks will be available as will beer and wine, for which we suggest a small donation.
