Hello Music Lovers,
Come join us for the last Doverlaff House Concerts show of the season. When we first started this series we intended to only have shows in the rainy months, but, somehow, we have managed to schedule a July show each year. Our very first concert was with Jonathan Byrd in Cheryl’s Garden in July and we have maintained that tradition. This year we will carry on with a fantastic season closer with the amazingly poetic duo of Danny Schmidt and Carrie Elkin. This is going to be an incredible show.
Danny Schmidt is what I often refer to as a Poet With a Guitar. A man of amazing power with words who creates images that will live with you for a long long time. Many of you saw Danny here in May of 2010. That was an amazing show and I am sure this one will be the same. The Austin Chronicle said of Danny, “In today’s underground folk world, Danny Schmidt is spoken of in reverent tones, drawing comparisons to Leonard Cohen, with a poetry that breathes naturally and without pretension, with results that are both attractive and intense.” The Austin American-Statesman said “His songs, so lyrically rich, so finely crafted, carry the power of fine poetry. They accentuate the narrative. They celebrate subtlety. Schmidt’s songs are filled with nimble wordplay and cool cadences; they move with the light feet of a dancer. But in the tone and theme, they convey weight and depth and substance.” Sing Out Magazine wrote “Danny Schmidt is a force of nature: a blue moon, a hundred-year flood, an avalanche of a singer-songwriter. His songs are a flood of poetry, mythology, folk wisdom, and surprise.” But one of my other very favorite singer/songwriters Jeffrey Foucault, said it best when he stated “Everything about the man is gentle, except his capacity for insight, which is crushing.”
For a couple of videos to give you a taste of the art and magic that is Danny Schmidt, listen to his amazing epic Stained Glass. A different flavor of Danny Schmidt music can be found in Better Off Broke which you may have heard if you ever listen to Folk Alley on line, a great place for the big tent of folk music. Here is an album cut of Swing Me Down, yet another flavor of Dannyness.
Danny will be joined for this show by his wife, Carrie Elkin, also an excellent musician and entertainer. Texas Music Magazine chose her as one of the Top Ten Artist of 2011. The Austin Chronicle said “an earthy combination of strength and compassion…reminiscent of the winsome beauty created by a young Nanci Griffith.” A couple of you tube videos may give those of you who are not familiar with her work a feel for what a great songwriter/singer she really is. Jesse Likes Birds is a good example, as is her version of Danny’s Company of Friends, performed by her with Jonathan Byrd.
This show will happen on Monday, July 16 here in Cheryl’s Garden at the Doverlaff Mansion. We are located at 7326 SE Woodward St, Portland, Oregon 97206. As usual we suggest a $15 donation per seat. Seats can be reserved by sending a check for the suggested donation to us at the address listed. Please make the check out to me, Dan Dover, and put Danny Schmidt/Carrie Elkin house concert in the memo line. I will put you on the list if you let me know you are coming, but no seats are guaranteed until the donation is made. As in all of our shows, we will provide an array of tasty snacks for free. Beer and wine is available as well and we suggest a small donation for those.
As I mentioned this will be our last show for the season. We will start our 2012-13 season in October. We will spend the summer scouring several folk festivals and performance venues for next year’s line up. We hope to see you here for this show as we know it will be most excellent. Come help us end the season on a very high note and kick off our summer festival season with a bang.
By the way, we have a new website for Doverlaff House Concerts. You can find it at doverlaffhouseconcerts.org. Be sure to check it out, sign up and leave us a comment. Next season we will be doing all our mailings from that site.
